NAC begins preparing for NMF

Last week was a bit of getting stuff organized for the Norman Music Festival. Bands have been dropping of demos for the festival so I've been sorting them out by making a spreadsheet of the soundtrack, the band name, contact information, and e-mail. So far I've done 24, but we'll see how much more come in. This part of the festival is for picking a couple local bands that aren't in the "actual" festival, and getting their names out there by providing them some playing time. It's pretty neat seeing all these local bands and the talent that aren't even known yet. Who knows, maybe I just met the new Radiohead.

We also had a meeting with Sonder music company to talk about the responsibilities Amanda and I will be in charge of at NMF. We are mainly in charge of the kids stage. Face painting, fake tattoos, drawings, and even a science fair will be over at the kids stage. Amanda and I have to find volunteers, tables, chairs, and donations for the booths. I'll be stopping by Sams, Target and Ed Copeland's for art supplies and food donations within these next couple of weeks. Ed Copeland's should be exciting because we'll have to provide open arts and crafts, papers and markers, and stickers for the kids. Sams is donating up to 100$ for snacks and water while Target will fill up the rest of the missing pieces. I'll also need to check in with Party Galary to pick up some booth decorations for the kids.

Amanda and I will need to set up 10-15 tables and 30 chairs. Should be exciting...The shifts for the volunteers will be about two hours each, while of course Amanda and I will have to stay until 8 PM. Long, but eventful day...

My duties last week was the spreadsheet, and tweets for upcoming events for NAC. The Medieval Fair was last weekend so I was in charge of the facebook updates and tweets to advertise what was going on. For this week, Sonder just e-mailed me with some updates of the kids stage. We already have all the volunteers, and food donations, so I'll just be finishing up on the donations of the table and chairs.

Hours last week: Mon 9-10, Wed 9-10, 12-1:30 and Friday 1-5

Until next time...

Spring Break Friday (3-12)

Considering I was out of town the Saturday of Spring Break (3-12) I will fill you in on some stuff I did on that Friday.

Because the music festival is getting close, NAC is busy, busy, busy. I am preparing for the volunteer work Shagah is having me do while also finishing up on Rick's grants for the festival. It took us at least 4 hours to finish up on the four grants Rick is sending into the Norman district of arts for the festival. I basically did busy work. That is, copies, dividers, and researching bands information to put into these grants. I'm not going to lie, I really didn't know what a grant was and the purpose of it until I had to stock all of them. It was a lot of busy work that was a little overwhelming just because of how thick the binder ended up being. There was information about the past music festivals, the bands, the line-up...etc. I actually learned a lot about the past music festivals, making it a little easier to know what to expect for this year. I went to the festival last year and it was a blast, but of course I wasn't informed as well as now as to what is the purpose of the festival and what makes it so special.

So the grants were fun...ha, but I did get to be a "secretary" for the entire day. I was there from 9-5...long, long, long day. We all got to have lunch together at In the Raw, it was a good bonding experience. Rick had a lot on his plate for that day, so some good sushi was needed. We ended up having to go back to work after we ate, which was entirely too hard considering how much we all were waiting by the minute for Spring Break. We were all so tired because once we got back we all realized we were missing a lot of information for the grants. I had to finish up Rick's resume, band information, and just the history of NAC. All together an informative experience.

My hours ended up being from that week: Wednesday 9-10, Thurdsday 8 PM-11 PM and Friday 9-5.

For this week (3-22/3-26) I am the only one in the office right now. Rick's out of town this Monday while Josh, the grad student who works here, is not here either. I am thinking we have to research and watch the music festival's band DVDs. There's a lot on Shagah's desk...like five already and it's only Monday. We're also having a logo contest for the NAC. This has nothing to do with what we are doing as NAC staff, but we all need a little laugh in the office so Matt decided to make-up this contest. We have to create "NAC" into an edible logo made out of anything. I've heard people are doing jello, macaroni.... you name it. So this should be a fun week. The logos are due next Monday. Fun! Fun! Fun!

Well until next time...

Recent NAC assignments

Last week was a research week. I was assigned to look up ad prices for the NAC Web site. We are now posting ads of other companies on our site. NAC doesn't know the prices so I was given the assignment of researching the best prices/offers into an analysis. My final paper turned out to be about three pages long. Pretty crazy how detailed pricing ads can be.

So far, I have learned some independence within this internship. I like how trustworthy Rick and Shagah are with me. I turned in my membership forum, press release and analysis without any guidelines. It's been tough trying to find how NAC works but I have definitely found my niche. The analysis was probably the longest "research" paper I have done within NAC, just because I wanted to make sure I had enough detail.

We also had a faculty meeting, usually have this every Friday. We talked about grants, 2nd Friday and just stuff in general we all are working on. Rick is letting me do my own thing, with my own schedule which gives me more confidence. We talked about the Music Festival and some new artists signed up for it as well. I'll be working at the Norman Music Festival, but just as a volunteer. I'll give you more insight about what I am going to do when the time gets closer. I do know I'll be interviewing some of the bands, so that'll be fun.

My hours last week were Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 9-10:30 and Friday 9-3.

I'll keep you posted for this week on Friday. So Until next time...
